The Truth of Abuse
The truth of abuse is hard for most of us to hear or acknowledge. Unfortunately, it is an epidemic within our society. I feel it is time to stop the cycle of abuse so we can start healing, so it’s time to accept some hard truths.
The following are a few statistics about abuse, and the numbers are astonishing :
It is conservatively believed that in today’s society 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually molested before they are 18 years old – which means 1 in 5 of America’s youth or 20% to 25% of the population!
There are more than 42 million survivors of sexual abuse in America alone.
Somewhere between 2/3 and 90% of sexual abuse victims never report.
90% are abused by someone they know, love, or trust.
3.3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes each year.
60% of American children are exposed to violence, crime, or abuse in their homes, schools, and communities.
Children exposed to violence are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol: suffer from depression, anxiety, and PSTD; fail or have difficulty in school; and become delinquent and engage in criminal behavior.
1 in 5 teen girls and 1 in 10 teen boys are victims of dating violence.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
All of these girls and boys eventually become adults and live with the effects of surviving abuse until they hopefully seek help. Let’s start healing the pain and wounds of our past.
